How to Prepare Kids for a Fun and Stress-Free Photo Session

As a San Luis Obispo family photographer, I’ve spent years working with wiggly toddlers, shy preschoolers, and everything in between. Here are my tried-and-true tips to help set your kids—and you!—up for photo day success.
1. Dress Comfortably
Choose outfits that your kids feel good in. If they’re uncomfortable, it will show in the photos. Soft fabrics, breathable materials, and outfits that allow for movement are key. Avoid anything itchy, stiff, or too tight.
2. Keep It Light and Fun
Hype up the session by telling your kids it’s going to be an adventure! Avoid putting pressure on them to “be good” or “smile perfectly.” Instead, encourage them to just be themselves and have fun. The best smiles come naturally!
3. Bring Snacks and Breaks
A little snack break can be a game-changer! Bring easy, non-messy snacks and water to keep everyone happy. Avoid anything that might leave any color on lips or clothes or stick on teeth (sorry, chocolate lovers!).
4. Let Them Be Themselves
If your child is extra wiggly or shy, that’s okay! I’ll work with their personality to capture their natural expressions. Sometimes the best moments come when kids are just being kids!
5. Bring a Favorite Item
A small comfort item, like a stuffed animal or favorite toy, can help your child feel at ease. Plus, it can make for some adorable, meaningful photos!
6. Embrace the Chaos
Real-life moments make for the most beautiful images. If your child is running, laughing, or even being a little silly, that’s perfect! The goal is to capture their true personality and the love within your family.
7. Parents, Stay Relaxed and Remember to Smile!
This is probably the most important one! I know family photos can be stressful–the planning, the getting everyone ready and arriving on time! The thing is that kids feed off their parents’ energy. If you’re calm and having fun, they will too. Also remember to keep smiling. I can’t tell you how many times I have caught the best smiles of the kids, only to have the parents with a stressed expression on their face. Even if things don’t go exactly as planned, trust that we’ll get amazing photos that reflect your family’s love and connection.
