Butterflies, Beaches, and Beautiful Backdrops: Why I Love Shooting at Monarch Butterfly Grove
If you’ve been around here for a bit, you know how much I love discovering special photo spots—and Monarch Butterfly Grove in Pismo Beach is hands-down one of my favorites. It’s one of those magical places that offers a little bit of everything: towering eucalyptus trees, soft golden light, sandy trails, and of course, the beach just steps away. Whether I’m photographing a high school senior, a playful family session, or a glowing mama-to-be, this location never disappoints.
One of the things I adore about Monarch Grove is the variety. The grove itself has a calm, woodsy vibe with its tall, whispering trees and dappled sunlight filtering through the leaves. It creates such a cozy and natural feel—perfect for candid, connection-filled moments. And just a short walk down the path, you’ll find yourself standing on the wide, open sands of Pismo Beach. That means we can capture two totally different looks in one session: dreamy forest and classic California coastline. Yes, please!
Of course, there’s also something pretty special about the monarch butterflies themselves. If you’re lucky enough to visit during the migration season (typically late October through February), you might just catch them fluttering in the trees, adding a little extra magic to the day. Even when they’re not there, though, the grove still feels enchanted.
What I love most, though, is how you shine in this setting. I’ve photographed seniors here laughing barefoot in the sand, families cuddling beneath the trees, and kids chasing the waves while the sun sets behind them. It’s the kind of place that invites you to slow down, breathe deep, and just be present with the people you love.
