Lifestyle Newborn Photos: How to Prepare your Home
Bringing home a new baby is one of the most beautiful and exhausting times of your life. Between feedings, diaper changes, and just soaking in all those newborn snuggles, the idea of preparing your home for a photo session might feel overwhelming. But I promise—it doesn’t have to be! When I come into your home for lifestyle newborn photos, my goal is to capture the love, joy, and connection between you and your little one—not perfection. You don’t need an Instagram-worthy house, and I’m not here to judge whether you have dishes in the sink or laundry on the couch (because, let’s be real, who doesn’t?). Let’s focus on creating a relaxed, joyful experience where you feel completely comfortable.
No Deep Cleaning Necessary—Just a Little Tidying Up
First things first: please don’t stress about deep cleaning. I’m not coming over to inspect your baseboards! Instead, just do a quick declutter in the areas we’ll be using. Toss stray items into a basket, clear off nightstands or coffee tables, and fluff the pillows. That’s it! The goal is to minimize distractions so the focus stays on your beautiful family.
Finding the Best Light (Natural Light Is Our Best Friend!)
Light is everything in photography, and we’ll be using as much natural light as possible. The best way to prep? Open up your blinds and curtains to let in soft, even light. I’ll also help find the best spots when I arrive, so don’t worry if you’re not sure where to start!
The Rooms We’ll Focus On
I typically photograph in three main areas:
- The Nursery – A sweet, sentimental space that tells the story of your baby’s first home. Whether it’s crib shots or rocking chair snuggles, this is a special place to capture memories.
- The Living Room – Perfect for cozy family moments, cuddling on the couch, or capturing interactions with siblings and pets.
- The Parents’ Bedroom – One of my favorite spots for soft, intimate moments. Laying on the bed with your baby creates relaxed, natural images that feel warm and timeless.

You don’t need a Pinterest-perfect home—I promise. But a few small touches can help create a cozy feel for lifestyle newborn photos:

✔ Choose a simple swaddle or onesie that complements your home’s tones.
✔ Have a few sentimental items nearby, like a favorite stuffed animal or book.

Keep the Essentials Handy (Because Newborns Are Unpredictable!)
Newborns run the show, and we’ll take plenty of breaks for feeding, changing, or just calming baby down. Having burp cloths, pacifiers, and an extra swaddle within reach will make things easier—but don’t stress if you forget. We’ll go with the flow!
