You’ve booked your senior photo session (yay!) — now the big question: what should you wear? Choosing outfits can feel overwhelming, but don’t worry — I’ve got you covered! As a San Luis Obispo senior photographer, I’ve worked with so many amazing teens and know exactly what works (and what to avoid) when it comes to what to wear for senior photos.
These basic tips will help you look and feel your best — and when you book with me, you’ll also get access to my exclusive Senior Style Guide, which goes way deeper with personalized outfit advice, inspiration boards, seasonal tips, and more.
Let’s dive in!
This is the most important tip. Your senior photos should reflect your personality — whether that’s cozy and casual, polished and preppy, or something all your own. If you’d never wear a dress in real life, don’t feel like you need to just for your photos.
Think about your favorite outfits — the ones that make you feel amazing. That’s a great place to start. Still stuck on what to wear? Pinterest has a ton of visual outfit inspiration for every vibe — from casual and cozy to bold and trendy.
Most senior photo sessions include time for outfit changes, so I recommend bringing:
A mix of styles gives your final gallery variety and shows off all the sides of your personality.
Solid colors and subtle prints tend to photograph best — they keep the attention on you, not your outfit. If you love florals or patterns, go for it! Just avoid anything super bold or neon that might distract or clash.
Layers like denim jackets, cardigans, or flannels are also a great way to add texture and visual interest without going overboard.
Think about where and when your session is happening. Light fabrics and soft colors are beautiful for warm, golden fields or beachy locations like Pismo Beach. Richer colors and cozy layers are perfect for fall sessions in Paso Robles or San Luis Obispo.
And of course, dress for the weather — it’s hard to feel relaxed and confident if you’re freezing or overheating.
A favorite necklace, a wide-brim hat, or your go-to rings can totally elevate your look and add personality. But too many accessories can take the focus away from your face. Keep it simple and true to your style.
Wear your glasses if you wear them daily — it’s part of your story!
From boots to sandals to your favorite sneakers, your footwear helps tie your look together. Make sure your shoes are clean and coordinate with your outfits. And feel free to bring an easy pair to slip on while we walk between locations — especially if we’re exploring some of the beautiful outdoor areas around SLO County.
These are just my basic tips for what to wear for senior photos, but when you book your session with me, you’ll get my exclusive Senior Style Guide! I have one specifically for girls and a separate one tailored to the guys. They’re packed with wardrobe advice, seasonal outfit suggestions, dos and don’ts, and visual inspo to help you feel completely confident and camera-ready.
My goal is to make your session stress-free and full of fun — and your outfit should feel like the best version of you.
